If you're using the Search facility it is possible to
manipulate the results depending on how you make your request. As follows:

if you enter -
information retrieval
- finds documents containing 'information' or 'retrieval'

if you enter
- information or retrieval
- same as above
-
if you enter
- information and retrieval
- finds documents containing both 'information' and 'retrieval'
-
if you enter
- information not retrieval
- finds documents containing 'information' but not 'retrieval'
-
if you enter
- web*
- finds documents containing words starting with 'web'
-
