transport anti-suv

I did have the Anti-SUV links with the rest of transport links, but there are such an astonishing number of groups, the only way is to give them a section all of their own. Many more to add yet.

Wildberry's car standing it's ground against intimidating competition!

Now I certainly don't speak on behalf of these groups, but the problem for me is not the farmer with his Land Rover or the people living in the wilds of Northern Canada, I can see if I lived there I'd probably have a 4x4 or SUV as well. The problem is, SUVs are not just out of place in the centre of cities, they're out of place anywhere there are surfaced roads and a temperate climate.

For example the 4.4ltr V8 Range Rover, according to the manufacturer, does a glorious 12.7 mpg around town and weighs 3,050kg. Just what you need to pick the kids up from school really, isn't it, and starting at over £45,000, I don't suppose many working farmers can afford that.

campaigning organisations from the UK
Alliance against urban 4x4s

As they say, The Alliance against urban 4x4s
'are a growing campaign that is uniting environmental, consumer, road safety groups and CONCERNED INDIVIDUALS all over the UK.'

Through us you can find lots of constructive, creative and peaceful ways to deal with your frustration at the increasing numbers of big 4x4s vehicles on urban streets.'

Brake - the road safety charity

Brake is a national road safety charity with two aims:
To prevent death and injury on the roads through education of all road users and campaigning for Government improvements to road safety.
To care for people who are bereaved or affected by serious injury in a road crash through support services, including a helpline and literature distributed through police officers.

Roadrage

Our purpose is to be a point of reference for "green" road transport campaigns.

The immediate aim is to put up loads of links to help people quickly navigate to information on these issues and find out about campaigns.

WasteMonsters

WasteMonsters has joined the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s - a group of grassroots campaigns and organisations which is calling for concrete measures to stop giant 4x4s taking over London.

and in the comedy corner........... (not necessarily pro-SUV, but who cares)
The Association of British Drivers

Worth a look just because I've never seen such a collection of horse shit gathered in the same place and I quote..........., well I was going to quote, I'd need to copy the whole site to give you full flavour of the nonsense.. Suffice to say it's worth a laugh, but be warned don't visit if you're feeling a depressed about the state humanity, this'll just bring you right down!

campaigning organisations from the USA
Changing the Climate

Their campaign is designed to tell the world what we think of those mindless suburban drones who insist on getting 12 mpg while driving their kids to soccer practice. Join us as we direct our social activist energies toward the exciting new sport of Big Game SUV Hunting.

What Would Jesus Drive?

Although I think Jesus is the reason or excuse for doing too many things already, you can't disagree with the principle.

What they say is,
'The question, "What Would Jesus Drive?" is a more specific version of the well- known question, "What Would Jesus Do?" Christians ask themselves "What Would Jesus Do?" to help guide them in their daily decisions as disciples (or followers) of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns in their hearts.'

It's all a bit religious dogma for me, but each to their own & you do get a bumper sticker!

Earth on Empty

I really love this! This group are ticketing SUVs with a look alike parking ticket. Over 1 million tickets have been given out so far in 48 States. Why don't you visit their site and get some for yourself!

The ticket says, 'Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and try to get honest with yourself. Did you get excited when you saw that ad of a SUV in the remote wilderness? Did you want to sue the manufacturer for FALSE advertising when you started driving it to the shopping center? Are you REALLY going to take that shiny new $40,000 SUV off road? We made this ticket because we live in the city, and so do you, and there’s something really wrong about the way the SUV is changing our streets and the air we breathe. This is not a militarized zone! Your truck contributes to a hostile and unhealthy environment for everyone. Think about it! Why not use it to carpool? Try taking the subway!! Find out more at www.suv.org! After all, there’s nothing in the American dream about sitting in traffic in your car by yourself for hours on end every day.'

Also on the site is information about a film being made inspired by 'Earth on Empty' - more details here.

Hummer Dinger

It's just occurred to me if you're a Hummer driver you're probably not bright enough to understand this site. But for the rest of us it's very funny.

Jump Start Ford

Jumpstart Ford works to end America’s oil addiction and to stop global climate change by convincing the auto industry to dramatically improve fuel efficiency and to eliminate greenhouse gases from its fleet by 2020.

Ford Motor Company has had the lowest fleet-wide fuel economy for the past 5 straight years, and for 20 of the last 30 years. Ford is America’s most oil-dependent automaker.

Concerned citizens are joining together to “Adopt” Ford dealers and enlist their support in the campaign for an ecological U-turn in the auto industry.

Stop SUVs

We're offering some balance. Plenty of people think SUVs are ridiculous, but without advertising money, these people don't get enough airtime to refute the SUV lies. We're arming them with some humour, persuasion and provocation.

SUV info link

The Road Hog Reduction Campaign targets Sport Utility Vehicles, the fastest growing, most environmentally damaging and deadliest segment of the personal vehicle fleet. This campaign has emerged from Friends of the Earth's Climate Change Campaign. Personal vehicles presently account for nearly one-quarter of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. These inefficient vehicles are not only contributing to the rise in global temperatures, they are threatening the safety of our highways.

 information from the UK
Carfueldata.org.uk

Exactly as the name suggests, this the UK Governments site to give fuel consumption and emissions data on (in theory) all cars currently on sale in the UK.

 information from the USA
Fuel Economy

This site from the United States Department of Energy, allows you to compare the fuel economy of different cars, trucks, SUVs etc. It gives guides to hybrid vehicles, fuel cells etc. Loads of information, for example did you know the Toyota Prius will give 60mpg in the city. Anyway you can download all the data in a pdf format.

campaigning organisations from outside UK & USA
noSUV.org

It's great to be able to include some links from non-UK/US organisations, there's a big world out there and there must be loads of similar groups, please send me the details and I'll get them listed. Right - back to noSUV.org, they focus very strongly on the safety problems with SUVs.

As they say, 'Welcome to New Zealand and Australia's unofficial anti-SUV (4X4) website. Cars already have a devastating effect on our health and the environment, yet some people seem intent on driving even bigger, more polluting vehicles, with idea that traffic problems are needed in our wilderness too.'
